Review of Google Chrome

(aka online beta testers will work for free)

In this week's news, Google launched Chrome, its beta response to Firefox 3. Like bees to beta honey, the world's tech enthusiasts e-elbowed each other to be the first to critique the web browser. The verdict thus far is most people like the sleek no-frills browser. The Incognito Window, a snooping spouse's worst nightmare, is a bit suspect for my tastes. Overall, I would have to agree with the Tech Illuminati, Google has made it to third base with this one.

Pros
  • Like most popular browsers, it allows for easy importing of bookmarks.
  • It allows html, plugins, and javascript to play nice together
  • Omnibox: Keyword searches via the address field is a delightful plus, also.
  • To manage security and RAM, it creates separate processes for each new tab opened.
  • Open source is always a good thing, right? (mash, mash, mash)
Cons
  • It has been noted that Google's Chrome may not support GIF animation frames, however.
  • Google's Chrome does not support Lively...a Google product.  What's up with that?
  • Currently, the Chrome browser does not work on Macs. However, knowing Mac users, they will have a Chrome for Macs version compiled by the end of the week.

Middle of the road
The Report bug or Broken Web site feature: Google Inc (GOOG.O) has offered all self proclaimed Tech Illuminati the ability to send reports of program bugs. Now, isn't that thoughtful of Google....

Myspace joins the Department of Homeland Security?

When logging in to their Myspace accounts, the last news item that most users would expect to see is a note from "Tom" announcing the popular social network's partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The Department of Homeland Security has asked MySpace to help distribute information about Hurricane Gustav. This information includes links to "How to Get Help", "Finding Friends & Family", "Health & Safety", "Donate & Volunteer", and "What Government is Doing".

While this isn't the first time that Myspace has worked with security officials, it is the first time that this union has bordered blatant self-promotion of a government agency. Yes, let's call it what it really is. After Katrina, our government learned that it is important to use every available outlet to let citizens know "What Government is Doing".

Although It is encouraging to know that our government is learning to use social media to increase the potential for a successful evacuation and rescue programme, one must consider the pros/cons of this type of union. Will Myspace and other social networks be swayed by Big Brother? This is an obvious concern.

Can government agencies truly effectively harness the power of social media without violating citizen privacy?

During our August 16, 2008 program, we will discuss online resources and aggregations of online magazines with online magazine editor, Guy Kawasaki, alltop.com. How do you quickly find the headlines of the latest stories from dozens of sites and blogs? Find out the answer to this question and more during the Technically Speaking Radio program.

Alltop site as a “digital magazine rack” of the Internet. To be clear, Alltop sites are starting points—they are not destinations per se. The bottom line is that we are trying to enhance your online reading by both displaying stories from the sites that you’re already visiting and helping you discover sites that you didn’t know existed. In other words, our goal is the “cessation of Internet stagnation” by providing “aggregation without aggravation.”

News: Google Adsense in Feedburner feeds

Until recently, when attempting to use Google Adsense for feeds, publishers experienced major disappointment. Originally, Feedburner was optimistic about this endeavor. However, for most Feedburner publishers the "FAN" option to monetize feeds simply did not work. Moreover, Feedburner announced that they were not quite certain when publishers would be able to insert ads into feeds. Illustration of Feedburner FAN page shown below:

But, Google has since taken matters into their own hands, developing an easy integration for feeds with their Adsense service.

Consider the current process “Beta”. Google has indicated that they will shortly make this migration process automatic so that the publisher can control the experience him-/herself via the Feedburner.Google.com domain. However, publishers may simply email, adsense-support-aff@google.com the following information:

  • Your FeedBurner account username
  • The Google Account email address you use to sign in to AdSense

And, they will help you set-up the account. But, please note that it is mandatory that you use your Google Account to use Adsense for your feeds.

After you have emailed the above information to Google, they will email you to outline the next steps for completing your feed migration.
